Why do I scrap?
I sat working in my scrap den today engrossed in a project with a deadline attached and got to thinking... why do I scrap?
I have been scrapping for several years, almost from the beginning of the big scrap boom. I remember those early days and how proud I was to get a picture or two down on a page and I remember the time it took to make the simplest of layouts. I'd work for hours and felt overwhelmed at all the pictures that I have had laying around for years. How would I ever get them all done? Sometimes when you start a new hobby, you play for awhile but lose the drive and interest as time goes by. Scrapping was not like that for me. I dove right in and never looked back.
As time went on, I had accumulated lots of the gadgets one can use to do this and that and I perfected their use. I read everything I could get my hands on on the subject. Magazines, books, the internet... My scrapbooking had been keeping up to date but I had not yet touched any of the old photos from the past. I seemed pretty content with my progress and plan and as long as I was accomplishing something, I was ok. But then something strange happened to me some time along the way. I started looking at projects and having ideas for things I could make other people and focused less on what I needed to make for me. When I look back at all I have made for others over the years, I am amazed! Each time I made something for someone else, I felt such an accomplishement. I had gotten to the point where I no longer scrapped for myself, I would much rather scrap for others.
I love making things for others. I taylor the item to the individual. When you are friends with someone and know them as well as you do, they become very personal projects. Parting with them never really seems difficult because I know they bring such joy to others and seeing the look on someones face makes it all worth while. That's that part that can take me back sometimes. To see someone completely overwhelmed by what you have created. It makes me smile...
I am a perfectionist but I really don't do anything that any other scapper couldn't do themselves. I don't plan pages. I don't plan anything. I just sit down and scrap, one page at a time... I just do it... and I don't usually stop until it's complete. Hours and hours, well into the night, night after night... I lose myself in my craft.
Why do I scrap? because I love others....
My most recent project is one a friend and I decided to create for one another. It was such a great idea... to make a place for one another to write... to journal that which we each choose. To provide questions, story requests and any other for a sort of therapy for one another.
